Now and then: The Cas Gasi kitchen
Fresh summer cocktails
There are so many lovely spots at Cas Gasi to enjoy a cocktail: under the circle of ficus trees on the lawn, at the little green table next to the trellis overlooking the vegetable garden, on the day bed with flowing silk canopy by the pool, or one of the many plush sofas inside. Not sure what to order? Try one of these three popular cocktail concoctions, or ask our bartenders to help recommend something to suit your tastebuds.
The Bee’s Knees
The phrase ‘bee’s knees’ was prohibition-era slang for ‘the best’. In that time, the addition of citrus and honey were used to cover the less than ideal smell and taste of bathtub gin. Of course, we no longer need to mask the flavour of our gin as we use only the very best, but we still like the contrast of citric and sweet nonetheless, teaming our finest gin with fresh lemon juice, honey simple syrup, then garnished with a cinnamon and orange twist.
Basil Crush
Inspired by whisky smashes, Jörg Meyer, from the Lion in Hamburg, invented the Basil Crush in 2008, going on to win ‘Best New Cocktail’ at the Tales of the Cocktail Spirits Awards. Using five leaves of fresh basil from our garden, Gin Premium, homemade ginger sugar syrup, fresh lime and apple juices, the Basil Crush is a fresh, clean and delicious afternoon pick-me-up.
The Old Fashioned
Developed during the 19th century and given its name in the 1880s the Old Fashioned is one of six basic drinks listed in David A. Embury’s The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks.
Dissolve a small lump of sugar with a little water in a whiskey-glass; add two dashes Angostura bitters, a small piece of ice, a piece of lemon-peel, 6cl of whiskey. Mix with small bar-spoon and serve, leaving spoon in glass.
