Sailing Adventures
When Cas Gasi owner Luis was growing up his father, a notary in Ibiza, had a llaüt, the traditional fishing trawler of the Balearic Islands. Made from wood to exacting standards by master craftsmen the llaüt can still be seen occasionally on the waters around Ibiza. Luis fell in love with sailing through his father and together, father and son would set out on amazing adventures, exploring the secret coves and beaches of Ibiza.
Luis has never lost his love of sailing. As a young father he bought a sailing boat, named ‘Carmen’ after his first daughter. He spent almost a year sailing Carmen around the Mediterranean, through the Greek Islands and down to Tunisia, all the while holding tight to his dream of sailing around the world.
Through his friend Javier Visiers, a naval architect, Luis got involved in the Whitbread Round the World Race project in 1985 and 1986. Together they financed the construction of their own racing yacht (Luis with a bank loan and Javier with a mortgage on his home!).
Their first race on the sleek 20-metre sloop ‘Siesta’ with an enthusiastic crew of 10 was the Trans Med regatta from La Grande Motte to Alexandria – and they came first. From there followed many more races and good results, culminating in sponsorship from Tabacalera Española as ‘Fortuna Lights’ and entering in a massive round the world regatta in 1985 and 1986 from South Hampton to Cape Town, Auckland and Punta del Este via Cape Horn.
During this time, Margaret, also a keen sailor, was part of the project and in charge of the ground operations, booking accommodation, shipping spare parts and delivering weather reports across the world. In a pre-Internet age it’s a wonder how it all happened!
Luis’ passion for sailing has never ceased and a daily visit to his actual 15-metre sloop is mandatory, as is escaping to Formentera whenever possible with the family. Luis is always the master and commander of his boat, as much home on the water as he is at Cas Gasi.
Cas Gasi can organise your personal trip on a sailing or motor boat to Formentera or around the island with the precision of an expert – make enquiries at reception and we’ll take care of everything.
